Normandy 2009 blog

For those who may be interested we also updated a blog of our trip to Normandy in 2009. You can click on this link to read about our journey http://sewellnormandy.blogspot.com/. "George" was shipped to Istanbul in Turkey where we met up with the other members of our convoy (Australians and New Zealanders). We then drove to Gallipoli, Greece, Crete, Italy, Switzerland, France and shipped home from Belgium.

The purpose of the trip was to arrive at Normandy in time for the 65th anniversary of D Day. We visited many museums, war graves, war sites and drove on roads through the battlefields.

The scenery was beautiful and the people we came into contact with in the various countries we visited were so friendly and welcoming.

It was a memorable trip in more ways than one. It was a challenge to both the vehicle, navigator and driver but one which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Blitz wireless van AKA "George"

Alaska Highway

Earlier in the year we decided that we would like to participate in the convoy being organised by the Military Vehicle Preservation Association (MVPA) in August/September 2012 along the Alaska Highway. The convoy known as "AC'12" will leave from Dawson Creek BC on 4 August 2012 and travel to Fairbanks and back. A round trip of 4,100 miles over 4 weeks. The purpose of the trek is to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the construction of the Alaska Highway which was built during WWII. Military vehicles were used to construct the road.

There will be 97 military vehicles and 43 chase vehicles (243 participants) in the convoy. Because of the overwhelming response to the trek registrations closed early. Fortunately we registered early so were lucky enough to obtain a spot.

We will take our Blitz wireless van which was restored for the trip to Normandy in 2009. The Blitz which we named "George" in honour of its previous owner will become our home for approximately 7 weeks.

Our friends Mervyn and Jan Piggott will also be joining us on the trip. They are taking their GMC truck.

The plan is to ship the vehicles in a 40' x 9'6" high cube container to Vancouver BC and drive to Dawson Creek a distance of approx 1,000kms. We are being met along route by a US group travelling up from Seattle.

At this stage there is not a lot to report. In the new year we will be busy arranging shipping, new passports, airfares and attending to the various paperwork required when you ship an old vehicle out of the country.
